Finding Strength in Hunger

In the Gospel, according to Luke chapter four, verses one through thirteen, we see the account of Jesus in the wilderness fasting for 40 days while being tempted by the devil. Jesus was both fully human and fully divine, and here we catch a glimpse of his humanity in full display because, much like us, the scripture says, “at the end of them he was hungry,” referencing his 40-day fast in the wilderness. I mean, let’s be honest, some of us get hungry every couple of hours. I can imagine where I would be after 40 days. The scripture states that the devil first tempted Jesus with food; knowing that he was hungry, he told Jesus, “If you’re the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” I don’t know about you, but when I’m really hungry, I get hangry, and at that point, there’s nothing that can stand between me and my next meal. So, if I’m being 100 percent honest, that loaf of bread sounds really good right about now. Let’s be honest, though, that’s my flesh speaking because we know through God’s word that “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” I think that is what fasting is all about. It is conditioning ourselves to say no to the flesh in a time of weakness. It allows us to tell God "I’m hungry, but I’m standing on your promise that says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst.” Next time you fast, remember that it is just as much for you as it is for the Lord. When you’re feeling hungry, find comfort in the fact that Jesus, too, was hungry. Then, when temptation comes your way, just as Jesus did, turn to God's word. When you’re at wits end, and you feel all hope is lost, fall back on God's promise that His “power is made perfect in weakness.”

Prayer:

Father, your Word is good, and your promises never come back void. Thank you for being my strength when I am weak. Forgive me for my sins and my unwillingness to fully surrender to you. I want to draw near to you, Lord. Pull me in close, father, and never let me go. Ingrain in my heart the desire to fast and strengthen my spirit, so I don’t fall victim to the desires of my flesh. Align my heart's desires with yours, oh God, and use me how you see fit in the expansion of your kingdom until the day you call me home. I pray all these things in Your Son’s name Christ Jesus, Amen!
