Luke 10:38-42
Have you even been in charge of an event, that makes you miss the whole celebration such as a birthday party, church event, or wedding? I remember for one of my daughters birthdays I kept doing things, making sure the sweet table was refilled, cleaning up after the kids, asking everyone if they needed anything, rather than just enjoying the moment. Many times our busy work just becomes a distraction. That's what happened to Martha. She opened her doors for Jesus and his disciples, and became busy preparing her house. Martha was worried, and upset she was doing all the preparations herself, while her sister, Mary, was sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His words. Mary didn't allow to be caught doing busy work distracting her from the presence and words of Jesus. She knew He was present, she knew He was speaking, so she sat at his feet. Martha missed it. She missed sitting at his feet because of the "busy" work that "had" to be done. What busy work is causing a distraction in your life to miss what God is saying and doing? Is it personal everyday errands? Is it the distraction and worry about the church program being on schedule? Whatever it is, Jesus is saying "you're worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed" (v41). Stop, relax and sit at the feet of Jesus. We live in a fast pace world, don't allow the tasks, or to do list, distract you from the presence and word of God.
Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, for always being present and always being available. Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to just pause and sit at your feet. I love you. Help me learn to pause and stop when you are speaking and moving. Remove all the "busy" work that's just a distraction and excuse to miss what you are saying and doing.
